Reverse Thoughts
Last night at the Jasperse house we did sing two Psalms. Yes, I said Psalms. For a book of the Bible that was written over 2500 years ago (I realize that I am way off on the dating) it sure does ring relevant. Daphne pointed out that one of the songs that we sang tonight was the song that they sang on 9/11/01. The song is an arrangement of Psalm 46. The title of it is "God Is Our Refuge and Our Strength." So here I go to once again type out a song.
God is our refuge and our strength, Our ever present aid, And, therefore, though the earth remove, We will not be afraid; Though hills amidst the seas be cast, Though foaming waters roar, Yea,. though the mighty billows shake The mountains on the shore.
A river flows whose streams make glad the city of our God, The holy place where-in the Lord Most High has Hise abode; Since God is in the midst of her, Unmoved her walls shall stand, For God will be her early help, When trouble is at hand.
The nations raged, the kingdoms moved, But when His voice was heard The troubled earthg was stilled to peace Before His mighty word. The Lord of hosts is on our side, Our safety to secure; The God of Jacob is for us A refuge strong and sure.
O come, behold what wondrous works Jehovah's hand has wrought; Come, see what desolation great He on the earth has brought. To utmost ends of all the earth He causes war to cease; The weapons of the strong destroyed, He makes abiding peace.
Be still and know that I am God, O'er all exalted high; The subject nations of the earth My Name shall magnify. The Lord of hosts is on our side, Our safety to secure; The God of Jacob is for us A refuge strong and sure.
After looking at this it says that this song was arranged in 1871. That was 130 years before the destruction actually happened and it is relevant. Praise God that we have toppled the humanists in one respect: Never can it be said that the Bible is not relevant to our lives. (I am not saying that the Bible was written in 1871, only this arrangement of that Psalm was written in 1871.) If you want the actual text of Psalm 46 here it is in the ESV:
1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. 5God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. 6The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. 7The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth. 9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. 10"Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" 11The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
